This is the message of a new study published in the journal «Archives of Neurology» and is one of the best on the subject. The  scientists conducted by the University of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, who  recruited 671 subjects: 192 patients with the syndrome who were  diagnosed with Sleep Clinic and 479 relatives who first responded to  questionnaires by phone.

As noted, the siblings of patients were 3.6 times more likely to develop the syndrome compared with other relatives. His children had a parent with the syndrome were almost twice the risk of events.

The restless legs syndrome is extremely common, and affects up to 10% of adults. Unfortunately  most do not know, so to spend sleepless nights, have to get up to walk,  as walking is the only thing that can alleviate their symptoms. However,  “no one needs to suffer without treatment,” says lead researcher Dr.  Guy A. Roula, professor of medicine at the University.

“There are treatments for it. If for example symptoms due to iron deficiency, taking supplements can help, and there are special medications that really help patients. ”

The  restless legs syndrome patients actually causes an irresistible need to  move their feet when there is no reason to do except sleep, complicates  any activity that requires long hours of immobility.

These  symptoms usually occur exclusively or aggravated in the afternoon and  evening, and the patient relieved if they get up and walk or do  stretching the legs.

Unfortunately,  the diagnosis is usually delayed because the initial symptoms are  usually attributed to something else, like poor circulation or  arthritis, resulting in approximately 40% of cases to spend at least two  decades before the patient know what is!
